MACROSS / Robotech Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross- 1984. Tatsunoko Productions - The very first character presentation cellulo from Tatsunoko Studios ( 1st Model Sheet / saishō no kyara settei ) in 1984. Originally three Japanese films for an avant-garde SF work. A huge success. So much so that, for the first time, the U.S.A. bought a foreign license from Japan. The result: the biggest animation license in the U.S. at the time, and for decades to come: the ROBOTECH universe license. In other words, the Star Wars of the mecha universe, with its whole marketing universe of futuristic robots.
