European artist in Rome circa 1850-1860 - Lot 56
European artist in Rome circa 1850-1860 Portrait of Orlando de Subiaco Watercolor over pencil on paper. Unsigned 24.6 x 17.5 cm This portrait, certainly executed in Rome, depicts Orlando de Subiaco, a model well known to painters in the first part of the 19th century. His face is recognizable in several works, including a drawing by Edgar Degas and paintings by Picou, Feuerbach and Lenepveu, notably listed in the Galerie Fabienne Fiacre catalog "Portrait 1820-1875". Subiaco is a village on the outskirts of Tivoli that many painters, musicians and men of letters visited for its picturesque appearance and the beauty of this mountainous site in Lazio. But even more inspiring was the presence here of a group of brigands, freedmen, exiles and rebels fleeing the city and the law to find refuge in the mountains. The figure of the "Italian brigand" turned shepherd delighted many painters and writers, fascinated by these respected "assassins". Expert : Cabinet Chanoit
