Provenance: Private collection, Paris; by descent
Having trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Limoges and then with Injalbert in Paris, Pierre Traverse took part in various Salons. He won a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1926, and presented his work at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the 1937 Exposition Internationale, where he created the monumental figure of L'Homme, a counterpart to La Femme by Daniel-Joseph Bacqué, to adorn the garden of the Palais Chaillot. For his works in stone and marble, Pierre Traverse is one of the few Art Deco artists to devote himself to direct carving. The sculptor drew his inspiration from the classical iconography of Antiquity, and applied a simplification of lines and a purification of modelling to his depictions of the human body. Many of his works are held by the Musée Despiau-Wlérick in Mont-de-Marsan and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
