From the mid-1930s onwards, Swiss sculptor Édouard Marcel Sandoz applied himself to the realistic figuration of his animal models. He drew his inspiration mainly from his many travels and strolls around Paris, particularly the bird markets and the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes. Exotic birds are a recurring theme in the artist's work, with series of parrots, macaws, cockatoos and parakeets.
