CLAUDIO CASTELUCHO Y DIANA 1820-1927

This part of Claudio Castelucho Diana's studio comes from the estate of Antoinette Castelucho, the painter's niece. Claudio's family owned a famous color merchant's store at 16, rue de la Grande Chaumière. They supplied Montparnasse artists in the 30s, as well as Picasso, Matisse and others.

Claudio Castelucho y Diana, born in Barcelona on July 5, 1870 and died in Plessis-Robinson on October 31, 1927, received his first lessons from his father, a theater decorator. After brief studies at Barcelona's Escuela de Bellas Artes, he moved to Paris with his family in 1892.

He worked with his father as a decorator and made his debut at the Salon of 1897, concentrating on Spanish themes. He taught at the Académie Colarossi and, in 1905, became one of the first teachers in the group of professors at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

His art reflects the influence of Spanish Impressionism, notably the broad, bright and luminous brushwork, as well as the themes of Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923). Several paintings in this sale are by Émile Antoine CASTELUCHO y DIANA (1879-1939), the artist's younger brother.
