Nowadays, cartoons are made with computers, but this was not the case until the 2000s, when they were made by hand.

A studio (often Japanese) is responsible for producing the episodes.

From the storyboard, which includes quick sketches and the script, layouts are created, which prepare the framing of scenes and the animation drawings (genga and doga). Animation drawings are the basis of cartoons, and are drawn in graphite and colored pencil.

These drawings are then flashed by a machine (the flasheuse), which reproduces the drawing in black on a transparent plastic sheet, the cel or cellulo. The colors corresponding to the character are then applied by hand.

To obtain a definitive snapshot of the cartoon, this cellulo is placed on an original background, which can be used for several scenes. It's the accumulation of all these snapshots that creates an episode or film.

Sometimes there are no documents (because the cartoon is made digitally), in which case the studio can publish official cellulos for collectors, rilezu (as for Naruto or One Piece). Fan cels, on the other hand, are artists' tributes to the series that have not been officially produced.
